Negative taken for July 14, 1963, Arkansas Gazette article "Helena-It's Truly a 'Marked' City," E5:2. In Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas, there are a multitude of historical and tourist markers, including a historical marker to Hernando De Soto. De Soto crossed the Mississippi River at a point south of Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas, as indicated by the marker. The reason for his crossing was to visit a Native American village. The marker reads, "1541-1931. June 18, 1541. Hernando de Soto crossed the Mississippi River near [Friar's] Point to Aquixo an Indian Village south of Helena, Arkansas erected by the James Bate Chapter of D.A.R."
